Tank 245 in St. George's Square, Ashford

Curator talks to Radio Kent about Ashford’s Tank

The tanks nobody really wanted

On 3rd June, BBC Radio Kent’s Steve Ladner visited the Museum to talk with Curator, John Worger, about Ashford’s Tank. The episode of Secret Kent was aired on 12 June. John revealed that many towns weren’t that keen on the tanks that had been presented; some refused to take tanks that were offered, to them and some had them removed quite soon after they had been presented (there was a proposal to remove Ashford’s as early as 1924). The few that were left at the outbreak of World War II were removed to contribute metal for the war effort. As we know, Ashford’s was retained because it housed an electrical substation.

We will add more information about Ashford’s tank to the Ashford’s Heritage website.
